Dental Hygiene

Why do I need to see a Hygienist?

Our clinicians believe that oral health is important to avoid dental problems. To ensure you have healthy teeth and gums, we recommend patients going to see a hygienist every 6 months. Both the dentist and hygienist work together to ensure your teeth are in good condition.

The hygienist offers dedicated time to clean your teeth and gums in areas where the toothbrush or floss can not reach. They offer a deeper clean and remove plaque and stains.

Benefits of hygiene appointments

  • Early Detection: By visiting the hygienist, they can pick up early signs of cavities and other conditions which may need intensive treatment later
  • Deep Cleaning: Removal of plaque and tartar especially around and under the gumline
  • Helps to prevent Gum Disease: Both dentists and hygienists can detect early signs of gum issues like gingivitis which can lead to serious problems if left untreated. Hygienists also offer intensive appointments to tackle gum disease
  • Stain Removal & Fresh Breath: Scale and polishing helps to remove surface stains like coffee, tea or tobacco which in turn improves your breath and smile

Types of Appointments

We have different types of hygienist appointments dependent on your dental needs.

Level 1 : Scale & polish

A 30 minute scale and polish appointment allows the hygienist to remove plaque and tartar which brushing and floss can not. Our hygienist will discuss a tailored regime for effective cleaning of your teeth.

Level 2: Air flow treatment

This is an advanced scale and polish appointment where air, water and a powder is used without the tooth being touched by a metal instrument. These appointments are useful for people who have sensitive teeth and those who have crowns, veneers and implants.

level 3: Dental Anaesthetic

This appointment includes all the above. Beneficial for those who are currently going through gum disease treatment or patients who require sections of their teeth to be numb when having a clean.

Direct Access hygienist appointments

These appointments can be booked without seeing a dentist first and you can book a hygienist appointment anytime. As we will need to complete medical history forms and discuss your dental issues, this appointment is slightly longer than a traditional appointment – around 40-45 mins and costs £115
