What are crowns?

Looking for a smile makeover? Looking for expert dentists in Letchworth? Look no further!

Dental crowns are a type of cap that covers a real tooth. It can help to protect and support existing teeth. If you have suffered trauma like a knock to the teeth, injury or trauma then this would offer further protection. Dependent on which part of the mouth the crown is fitted, there are a few material options for the crowns.

  1. Porcelain – these are recommended for the front of the mouth and is a material that looks similar to a natural tooth
  2. Ceramic – these are recommended for back teeth as it is made from a strong white ceramic material
  3. Metal Alloy (silver tooth caps) – these are made for out of sight teeth and not as aesthetically pleasing as porcelain or ceramic. We do not recommend these for a number of reasons which your dentist will explain.
You are likely to benefit from having a crown fitted:
  • If you have decay
  • If you have a crack in the tooth
  • If you have injured your tooth through accident or injury
  • If your previous implant has been poorly put in
  • If your implant has become loose
  • If you have recently had root canal treatment

Treatment Process

Two appointments are required to place crowns
Dental anaesthetic will be needed

First Visit

During the first visit, your dentist will remove any weakened parts of the tooth and prepare it, so it's equipped to hold the crown. Your dentist will take a digital impression so our in-house technician can make your crown precise. Colour matching is also carried out so the dentist can match the new crown to the surrounding teeth.

Second Visit

You will be given a numbing injection and your crown will be cemented into place. We will ensure that it fits in well and looks like the other teeth. Your dentist will give you advice on how to look after your crown to ensure it lasts a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

They are meant to last anywhere between 5 to 20 years (dependent on how well they are looked after and cleaned).

Dental crowns can break due to chewing non food items, sticky foods like toffees should be eaten with caution, injury or grinding. Also after a period of time, you will see your crown going more yellow than the rest

The good news is that we can repair crowns if they become chipped or broken. If you are worried about your exisiting crowns then please book an appointment with one of our dentists for an assessment.
